At Smoke Station HTX, we’ve always believed that cannabis is more than a product—it’s a lifestyle, a wellness tool, and a bridge to a better quality of life. Now, a new study from Marijuana Moment and Consumer Research Around Cannabis confirms what we’ve known all along: today’s cannabis users are not lazy or disconnected—they’re highly engaged, responsible members of society.
The Modern Cannabis Consumer Looks a Lot Like… You
For decades, outdated stereotypes painted cannabis users as young, jobless party animals. But new data out of Des Moines, Iowa, reveals a far more accurate picture: today’s cannabis consumer is middle-class, working, voting, and deeply rooted in their community.
In fact, over 16% of adults in Des Moines report using or purchasing cannabis in the past month—even though recreational cannabis is still illegal in Iowa. These consumers are often homeowners, parents, professionals, and taxpayers. They’re not hiding in the shadows—they’re shaping the future.
And in legalized states? That number jumps even higher, with more than 24% of adults reporting monthly cannabis use. This isn’t a fringe group. This is mainstream America.
The Rise of Responsible Use
One of the most powerful takeaways from this study is the shift in daily or near-daily cannabis use. According to Carnegie Mellon’s Jonathan Caulkins, these frequent users now make up 80% of all recreational cannabis sales. But rather than fitting old clichés, most of these individuals are working-class adults between 25 and 40, many of whom use cannabis to unwind, support mental health, manage pain, or reduce dependence on pharmaceuticals.
And here’s a surprising trend: as cannabis becomes more legal, more women are using it, closing a gender gap that used to be driven by social stigma and risk. Legalization is not only normalizing cannabis—it’s empowering broader demographics to explore its benefits.
Civic Engagement and Cannabis Go Hand-in-Hand
Want to know one of the strongest markers of a responsible citizen? Voting. And guess what? Cannabis users are showing up at the polls.
In Des Moines alone:
54.4% of Gen X cannabis consumers voted in recent elections.
22% of Millennial consumers did the same.
Baby Boomers and even affluent professionals were strongly represented in both usage and voter turnout.
These numbers exceed national averages in many cases, proving cannabis users are not checked out—they’re tuned in.
Implications for Texas—and for Houston
So what does this mean for us here in Texas, especially as we continue to fight for smart cannabis reform?
It means the foundation for change is already here. Responsible, active cannabis consumers are in every neighborhood, every income bracket, and every voting booth. With a shift in public perception and increased civic engagement, Texas could soon follow other states in embracing legalization—not just for the revenue it generates, but for the reality it reflects.
